One film that wasn’t at Tribeca this year (and should be) is Andrew Dosunmu’s Restless City. The film premiered at Sundance last year to rave reviews and opens April 27th, 2012 in limited release. Restless City tells the tale of an African immigrant “living on the fringes of New York City.” The film’s main character Djbirl hustles to survive, and falls in line with the African Mob, as well as falling in love with one of their prosititues–a typical story, sure, but the script is reinterpreted in such a different way that you might not notie. What also strikes me most about this film is Bradford Young’s cinematography, with The Hollywood Reporter calling him the “true star” of the production.
