SCREEN: Whitewash, Black Surfer Documentary
by Winston "Stone" Ford
Black surfers? To the uninformed it sounds off-putting. We all have the image of the White surfer dude–long blonde hair, and phrases like “gnarly” and “cowabunga.” But yes, there are Black surfers. Sure, they’re few and far between, but just like Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters, Black surfers are slowly making their mark on a sport that is not associated with soul. This latest documentary, Whitewash, explores Black surfers and their take on “Black consciousness.” Narrated by Ben Harper and Tariq “Black Thought,” the doc explores the history of Blacks in surfing and interview surfers from all over the world, from California to Jamaica.
The doc is free to view on Hulu and is worth checking out.
