I keep telling y’all that New Zealand has some of the best soul music in the world right now, and I still get the side eye.
Just think: Fat Freddy’s Drop, Electric Wire Hustle, Hollie Smith and now Fredrick’s Brown. Taking American soul music and flipping it into their own. The duo of Fredrick’s Brown cut their teeth on the New Zealand club circuit before separately moving to Brooklyn and reconnecting years later. The duo, joined by fellow New Zealander Darren Mathiassen draws on such influences as soul, jazz, afro-beat, and their native Pacific Kiwi sound. The result is again some nice, tasty soul music.
The trio plays all over New York, most recently at CMJ. I’m looking forward to hear more.
