Miles Bonny’s got soul. Classic, R&B, jazz and a little funk too. He raps, sings, makes beats and does a nice tap tap tap on the trumpet. But let me be clear, just when you think Bonny is taking you back with those old school covers of Raphael Saadiq “Still Ray” and The Meters “Clap Clap,” layered between Bonny’s smooth wale and vox, he brings you forward with jams like “Learning to Fly” that glide on synthy rails against a bouncy, yet funky backdrop and a bass line that gets you in all the right places.
Bonny’s performance at the CMJ Music Festival follows the release of his latest album “Lumberjack Soul,” featuring the aforementioned tracks, and described by Couch Sessions’ own Stone as:
…some of the best R&B you probably never heard.
With talent like this, you can’t miss Brooklyn Bodega’s Official Showcase at New York’s CMJ Music Festival. “We Got Jazz” will feature Miles Bonny, and stellar acts by Tiron & Ayomari, Chris Turner, Suzie Analogue, Apollo Brown, Yu and Has-Lo. Music will be provided by DJ Run P and one of my old stomping ground’s favorite hip-hop DJs, DJ Prinice Klassen out of Austin. The show takes place Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. Don’t miss it.
And…be sure to check out Miles Bonny with Suff Daddy performing “5 o’clock Suff” at Tape.tv studios in Berlin.
