If you’re a hip hop head and you’re breathing, then 9 times outta 10 you’re somewhere in the world talking about Kanye and Jay’s “Watch the Throne.” Whether you love it, hate it, or think it’s just aiight , it seems to be that’s ALL folk are talking about. Which is cool, but I ‘d rather be talking about my kind of hip hop, that “boom bap” hip hop that I bleed for. Which is why reviewing Gods’ illa new blendtape “CPR” is just what the doctor ordered. God’illa (cause what’s iller than God?) consists of 3 brothers Acem, Truth and Powerful repping the DMV and Brooklyn and have been making moves in the game for a minute and have caught the attention of industry vets like 9th Wonder, DJ Scratch and the host of “CPR” Downtown Loretta Brown aka Erykah Badu.
The blendtape starts off with “Sal’s Pizzeria” and the chorus of “on the scene like Radio Raheem with a box/we’re outside of it/all of these MC’s are robots” basically sums up how the bulk of the game is nowadays and “You Don’t Have to Be A Star” featuring Maimouna Youssef is the kinda song that’s PERFECT for the summer. The beat to “Glaciers” featuring Joe D. is just SICK, “Rockin’ With Yu featuring YU uses an ill Tip sample perfectly and “Anotherday” featuring Lyriciss is another head nodder you can’t front on. “Our Lane (To the Table)” featuring Substantial tells ya’ll other MC’s “Play out and choose, move like it’s our game/rap with us or stay up out our lane” and “Light the Way” featuring Kokayi ends the blendtape on a dope note. At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with 21 tracks of pure boom bap hip hop that the “CPR Blendtape” blesses you with. My only beef with “CPR” is it has TOO many guest features. I’d rather fall back and get used to Gods’illa before meeting EVERYONE they run with! But why knit pick when you’re getting good ole fashion hip hop, it’s not like we get fed this stuff everyday anymore.
