One of the more entertaining sounds to surface this year may well have come from South African Stone’s Throw signee and multi-instrumentalist Jonti. Much may not be known about the man at first glance, but he’s acquired chops, recording with such names as Mark Ronson, Santigold, Sean Lennon and the Dap-Kings for his latest album, Twirligig. Although his label head Peanut Butter Wolf describes Jonti’s music as “simple,” I actually think it’s rather complex, with lush arrangements and off-kilter atmospheric sounds. With an obvious base in hip-hop (he notes Madlib as an inspiration) Jonti’s sound is like no other I’ve heard this year.
