As moombahton continues to reach new heights in the summer of 2011, the key is as well to continue to look towards the sound’s future development. Charlotte’s David Heartbreak has excelled in this in a major way, as his work in bhangra and bashment melodies on his Girls Music released Heartbreak EP has shown. Heartbreak returns once again to his first deviation from the norm, the warm R & B vibes of moombahsoul for his latest compilation, Heartbreak presents Moombahsoul: Volume 2.
Moombahton’s flexible fit with a number of genres is one of the sound’s calling cards. With urban radio making the crossover in a more concrete way to a pop sound, moombahsoul presents a wealth of possibilities. Here on Volume 2 inventor Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom’s work with Heartbreak on heavenly James Blake/Nina Simone mashup church and Nadastrom make Blaqstarr’s “Rider Girl” a tropical delight. Also of major note Craze joins the moombahton party with Heartbreak on the bubbling LL Cool J “Jingling Baby” edit “Summer Riddim.”
As well, Heartbreak once again flipping current underground fave The Weeknd, as “Wicked Games” becomes “Love and Hate.” Also, classic R & B is represented well with NYC’s Sazon Booya joining the party on Minnie Ripperton “Inside My Love” remix “Dento De Mi Amor” and Brent and Ben Tactic’s magnificent Luther Ingram interpretation “I Don’t Wanna Be Right.” Established moombahsoul moombahtonistas Jon Kwest and San Antonio’s own Peligroso crew representative Sonoraa excel as per expectation. Top off the mix with yes, Munchi, as well as DJ Theory and Toronto’s Torro Torro doing solid work, and it keeps the heat blazing into the fall.
