NEW MUSIC: Moombahton catches a heavenly spirit on Heartbreak and Nadastrom’s “Church”
by Marcus K. Dowling
Anybody that has been exposed to moombahton for an extended listening in a club setting can attest to the deep, spiritual intonations of the sound. It’s an infectious groove that catches the dancer and gives them a near religious experience. For a generation of dance neophytes, the impulse is similar to that felt by other generations at the introduction of disco, Chicago house and New York’s garage sound.
Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom bring the deeper, tech house feeling and David Heartbreak brings the R & B vibes to “Church,” the latest moombahton banger of note. Originally intended for the Heartbreak presents Moombahsoul EP, the track mashes up Nina Simone’s legendary “See Line Woman” with James Blake’s “barelytherestep” of “Limit to Your Love” for a moombahton track that has very little to do with Dutch house, dembow, cumbia, or car alarms. It’s a spirit affirming instant classic, and one of the sound’s finest moments to date.
Videographer Hector Heathcote of themathematicalbrain.blogspot.com provides this engaging clip showing well, that the spirit of moombahton extends to the heavens. It’s a fun piece of work, and a soulful reminder that moombahton has so few rules, but has so much energy. Enjoy!
