You might remember Nigerian/French singer Asa from our interview with her at SXSW in 2009 and her excellent song “Jailer.” Since then she’s been quiet in the States but continues to make a name for herself overseas. In 2010 she dropped the album Beautiful Imperfection to great fanfare in France. “Why Can’t We,” is the second single off of the LP and is lot more upbeat (and less political) than her previous work. Check it.
Personally, I like her politically tinged first album better than her pop-friendly second one. However, Asa is able to go “vintage” without feeling cliche’. Check her first single, “Be My Man,” as well.
