When we first profiled the West Coast’s Shabazz Palaces some people didn’t immediately connect the dots to group member Ishmael Butler’s Digable Planets past. And that’s a good thing. It allowed us to measure the group without the baggage of so-called “golden era hip-hop.” His latest project sounds nothing like the former. Actually, its some of the more groundbreaking music I’ve heard in a minute. Spiraling beats and off-kilter production are hallmarks of the album. It may not be your cup of tea, but at least it deserves a spot at the table of increasingly dull and bland hip-hop.
