I love that indie labels are reaching out to some of the masters of the past for new musical inspiration. This year, we already had Strut releasing an album with Dennis Coffey (featuring among others, Mayer Hawthorne), and now we have rock label ANTI- releasing a new LP with none other than Booker T (of Booker T and the MGs).
The Memphis bred multi-instrumentalist has been busy of late, and still recording. He’s worked with everyone from The Drive By Truckers to punk band Rancid. However, I think he’s found his natural groove with The Roots on this remake of Lauryn Hill’s Everything is Everything. Booker finds himself in his natural spot–behind the keys–as Questlove and company fills in the blanks. Also behind the boards is Daptone’s (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings) Gabriel Roth. Booker’s album, The Road From Memphis is out on May 10th.
