New Music: Hidden Cat – Stillness is the Move (Dirty Projectors edit)
by Winston "Stone" Ford
[ed note: Big up to Mike Lights for turning me onto this a while back. It’s been sitting on my Hard Drive ever since.]
As I’ve told y’all many times before, The South seems to be killing the “chillwave” game. Whether it’s Macon, Georgia’s Washed Out or Columbia, South Carolina’s Toro Y Moi, there are dudes out there who are proving that you don’t have to be from Brooklyn to make progressive music.
Enter Chapel Hill, NC’s Hidden Cat aka Madison Bullard. The 19 year old college student has already made waves in my old stomping ground of Tobacco Road. What drew me to him is this edit of Dirty Projector’s track Stillness is The Move (y’all remember Solange covered the track as well). His light addition of some neo-house synths add the extra dose of smoothed out rhythms to the piece.
Also for your consideration, the equally smoothed out Get With It (Gianpaolo Dieli C64 Mix). Perfect for a rainy week.
