New Music: ZAKEE – Freedom
by Winston "Stone" Ford
Where was I when this track dropped?
Thanks to a business connect that I met at SXSW, I’m blessed with the sounds of ZAKEE. The Philadelphia-bred, NYC living musician has been on some people’s radar for some time, dropping some material through New York’s Green Owl Records label. But this is the first I’ve heard of him, and I’m glad I did.
In a time where we’re bomblasted by sounds left and right, ZAKEE sound is worldly and eclectic, bringing the off kilter sounds of Brazil and South America into his instrumentals. Working with everyone from M.I.A. to Theophilus London the triple threat (singer/songwriter/producer) represents the new creative shift in urban music. Already getting recognition from Rolling Stone and UK magazine Dazed and Confused the dude’s sounds separate him from the pack and I see him going far in 2011.
His full-length project, Assimiliation drops via Green Owl/Warner Music this year. What do y’all think?
