Download: Funk BC (Before Chromeo) by DJ D Painter
|Today, The Couch Sessions is launching a new branded DJ Mix series, simply titled, The Monthly Mix. We have searched high and low for some of the best DJs and tastemakers from around the world. You’ve already had mixes from DC’s DJ Dredd, New York’s Cosmo Baker, and introducing Hollywood’s newest resident DJ D. Painter. As always, the artwork has been skillfully created by Neil Maclean of The Six Five Design Group.|
Hollywood’s D.Painter made his mark in the DC area before leaving for sunny LA he presided over one of the better parties in Washington, DC’s Music Scene, Hipster Overkill. Since then, the DJ has ventured on the West Coast, working with such names at Digiwaxx and getting props from the one and only Diplo. For this month’s mix, Painter gives us an interesting take on what inspired funketers du jour Chromeo. The result is over an hour of 80s funk goodness. Even if you’re unfamiliar Chromeo, you already know the names like The Time, Prince, Mary Jane Girls, New Edition, Cameo, and Sheila E. As he explains….
Being a product of the 80’s I have always had a soft spot for the Funk groups I grew up on but have never had too many venues to play that music. With the rise of the Electro scene, and specifically Canadian Synth-Funk revivalists Chromeo, I noticed an opportunity to drop more Rick James and Prince randomly during Dance sets without having the crowd stop and give me awkward looks. With every new trend there is usually a decades old scene that inspired it that the young club and festival attendees are completely oblivious too. So, with that being said, here’s my homage to the funky post disco era that was the 80’s club scene… Funk B.C. [Before Chromeo].
