After successfully stumbling upon this party last year thanks to JCrillz of Hip-Hop is Cool Again, I made it a point in 2011 to stay an extra day in Austin to catch this year’s BBQ. The “epic party” (Note: It still dosen’t have a name) is hands down one of the best hip-hop experiences you’ll see during the festival. There’s no postering, no wack rappers hogging the mic, and no BS. Just cool ass people having a cool ass time in a laid back environment.
Like I said last year, it’s of note that The Park has become one of hip-hop’s foremost’s backing bands of late. Not only have they worked with Tanya Morgan, Wallpaper, Alice Russell, Big K.R.I.T. and Grillade, but they also have backed Freddie Gibbs at both SXSW and CMJ. And although not as many MCs took the mic this time around, and an early appearance from the po po brought the band inside, the party definitely lived up to its epicness.
