I had the chance to see Andreya Triana with Bonobo this past fall in Chicago and when I heard we were previewing artists for the lead up to SXSW, I thought it would be great to share more about this wonderfully gifted artist from Brighton, England (also briefly featured last summer here at The Couch Sessions) who will be making an appearance at the festival off the heals of a short stint performing in France.
This past September, Triana released her debut album “Lost Where I belong” which was also produced by fellow Ninja Tune Records artist Bonobo (a.k.a. Simon Green). She plays a bit of guitar and I would compare her voice to India Arie in that it has a bit of a raspy tint to it when she hits the lower notes, but maintains the quality of her tone and can really belt it out when she wants.
You can check out a free download of the acoustic R&B flavored title track of “Lost…” at Amazon.com. She also appeared on the “Ninja Tune XX” (20th Anniversary) compilation as well as on three tracks off of Bonobo’s recent “Black Sands” release with her standout performance being on the soulful “Stay the Same” where she steals the show. Her voice on the track is very delicate, almost near whisper, but still maintains a strong presence. In the live performance of the song in Chicago, she upped the power a bit and really made for a gripping vocal highlight of the show. Check out the video snippet I took below-
