Big up to the homie Jerome Baker for yet another stunning mix, this time in celebration of one of the best soul groups of all time: The Brand New Heavies.

The late 80’s and early 90’s on BET were some of the best periods in music. You still had Donnie Simpson on Video Soul every night with the latest R&B of the day, and even during the day, you had Video LP and Rap City dropping some of the most diverse music of the time.

But out of all of those songs, Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul was the flagship, and it was influential in profiling some great UK Soul, from Simply Red to Lisa Stansfield. But it was Brand New Heavies that probably had the greatest long lasting impact during that time. The soul collective of American N’Dea Davenport, and three blokes from London redefined what soul music was, mixing it in with the acid jazz scene that was taking place in the UK at the time (think Jamiroquai).

On the hip-hop end, the group worked with everyone from Q-Tip to the legendary Guru, and even though the group has had its ups and downs the music is still timeless.

I love how Jerome blends not only the music but interlaces it with their Video Soul interview, creating an instant nostalgia trip. Check it.
