It has been two years since we’ve heard the glorious vocals of Robert Smith in new music (The Cure’s “4:13 Dream”) and he returns to provide those beautiful sounds again with Canadian experimental electronic duo Crystal Castles to remake their track “Not in Love” from their most recent album. The duo consists of producer Ethan Kath and Alice Glass on vocals.
The thumping beat and huge waves of electronic synthy goodness are what help make this track so good. The repeating synth intro adds a bit of a freaky 80’s goth feel to it as well. As a long time fan of The Cure, I would love to see Robert Smith steer the band in a similar path to this style of music and I have the feeling a lot of fans of their more synthy-sounding tracks will agree with me.
Compared to Glass’ more subdued and seemingly muted vocals on the original track, Robert Smith’s distinct vocal style really gives the song a more emotional edge.
Crystal Castles go on tour next March starting off in San Diego and will end the tour at a gig in their hometown of Toronto.
This version of “Not in Love” will appear on a Crystal Castles EP of the same name via Fiction Records (UK label also featuring The Cure, Elbow, Snow Patrol, and others) on December 6th. Enjoy the download below-
