COUCHxJAPAN: DigiCrates Presents…A Tribute To Jun (Nujabes Tribute Album)
by Winston "Stone" Ford
To most, Nujabes (Jun Seba) was not a household name, but to those on the underground, the hip-hop producer was one of the world’s rising stars. Tragically, his life was taken away in a traffic accident in February of this year.
If you’re a fan of underground music, a Nujabes-affiliated project is essential to your collection. He’s worked with everyone from Japanese artists such as Uyama Hiroto to American hip-hop acts like CYNE and CL Smooth. Add to that his work with modern Japansese anime, particularly the great Samurai Champloo, and you see why he was an underground hero.
In addition to his production front Hydeout Productions, Jun also owned two record stores in the Shibuya District of Tokyo, which was a destination for crate diggers around the world. Even with his noteworthy he was notoriously reclusive, even after death, as his funeral only made news weeks after he died.
However, like producers before him, he lives on. In April we brought you Subsoniq Radio’s tribute to Nijabes, and the spirit carries on with this DigiCrates tribute, which brings together 12 artists who were close to the late producer. Enjoy.
