“Where if you know the Ave. People automatically know the path, You don’t have to do the math, in Southside…Queens, Queens.” – Pharoahe Monch
KRS One said “Queens keeps on faking it” but you REALLY can’t front on Queens. Possibly two of the best hip hop group ever come out of Queens in Run DMC and A Tribe Called Quest. Possibly two of the best MC ever in Nas and LL Cool J rep the borough. Yeah, MC Shan might have taken that L to the Blastmaster 23 years ago but Queens has been holding it down ever since.
Nike is running an ill campaign called “1 Love” celebrating the AF1 and hoops culture thoughout NYC’s 5 boroughs with each one getting a custom designed AF1 and a video doc about the culture of each borough.
The Queens doc focuses on 3 friends, Nigel Sylvester, Nigel Sparks and Jason “Cheech” Hall who own a BMX/Kicks shop in Queens. Nigel (Sylvester) explains how he got into BMX bikes by riding his bike to the park to play ball, but since he wasn’t that nice he got more into bikes. The 3 friends take you on a tour through Queens from hoops powerhouse Christ the King High School (alum including NBA champion Lamar Odon & WNBA star Sue Bird) to the Colliseum on Jamaica Ave where they show you first hand how AF1’s on uniform in Queens. And the Queens AF1’s? BANANAS! Green on white, accented in yellow with the “Q” on the side with the bubble gum sole?!?! Yeah, Nike put in work on these. After peeping the Queens docs and the kicks you’ll be reaching for some classic Mobb Deep, CNN, Lost Boys or Nas.
