When you listen to an artist like Jose James, you understand that he’s not just some average disposable singer who’s just trying to get massive radio play and make big bucks.  You know in your heart that you are listening to a true artist, and more importantly, a vocalist with tons of integrity.  Jose, in my humble opinion, is a brave soul.  Here is a man still in his twenties who has made the decision to passionately put jazz at the forefront of his blossoming career.  Jazz!!! You’d think that in this day and age, it would be a novel concept.  But it actually makes a lot of sense.

You see, jazz is the father of contemporary American music, period.  You have to have the conviction, the character, and the charisma to pull it off to its fullest effect, and he’s got all of those things intact.  He’s also got a great understanding of his musical history, so he brings an authenticity to the game that is palpable to the point that you forget that he’s really a rookie in the industry.  To his credit, he has collaborated with top-notch talent (Jeff Neve, Nicola Conte, Basement Jaxx, and Jazzanova just to name a few) and released three full-length albums.  His latest, Blackmagic, sees him going back to the future to push the seasoned sound of jazz forward into exciting new heights.  Jose’s silky smooth baritone and sexy stage presence turn any show he does into a sanctified temple of seduction.  He will be blessing the DC area with his presence once again, performing at Liv with special guest Heidi Martin on Thursday, August 5, 2010.  Doors open at 7:30 PM.
