Dope Duo 2 Peep: Kinky Notti

by Yvette Travillian

There’s something about an odd-like male/female duo making extremely innovative music that just immediately captures the hearts of music fans. You’ve got your J*Davey, Quadron, Sonnymoon and Hanna & Beatr8 for example – and now there’s another pair making their way into my headphones. They go by the name of Kinky Notti and although they’ve been generating wide-spread buzz in their native Chicago and beyond for the past couple of years, me always being hella late just got put on like right now.

Kinky Notti is comprised of producer Tshurhad Chivas and his partner in beats Havanah Maxie. Unlike the duo’s I mentioned above where it’s primarily the lady taking on the role as lead vocalist, in the case that is Kinky Notti it is actually Tshurhad claiming that title. His disfigured like voice and beats and Havanah’s back-up vocals and instrumentation make for a very unique and experimental blend of funk, rock, hip hop and soul.

Heavily influenced by artists like Gnarles Barkley, Prince The White Stripes and Outkast, Kinky Notti’s sound comes off very far left and at times somewhat confusing, which is why I think I like it. It’s a little weird and crazy but somehow works. There are a few  songs that have struck a major cord in my eardrums and they are; “Beneath the Deck”, “Not the First” and “Ghetto Love” (which was released as a single a couple of months ago). All which I have included below (because I’m cool like that) and all are available for download via their Bandcamp page. Check em out yo.
