As Just Blaze described to us a while back, the reason that there are no true remixes in hip-hop is because a computer needs to “listen” a song to count it as a radio spin. Any deviation from the base track and the spin dosen’t get counted, and the label loses compensation for airtime.
So no more B-side house mixes. No more Pete Rock do-overs. FAIL.
However, the ever creative Janelle Monae, already going against the grain–defies conformity and drops a true remix. Not only do they switch up the track (computers be dammed), but she recruits fellow Atlantic label-mates B.O.B. and Lupe Fiasco for support. But let’s not even talk about them. Let’s talk about Ms. Monae spittin’ on the mic, proving that she can do almost anything at this point.
