The Mis-Adventures getting to the “MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy” Solo Exhibition

Whew! June 12th was HOT. It was even hotter on the chartered shuttle that was supposed to take us to Fredericksburg, which decided to break down on U St. It was 5pm and we were a half hour behind schedule. Me and my dos chicas, Jendayi and Grav, stood out in the hot-ass-shade with lady-like perspiration turning into unlady-like sweat, we talked about the in.fa.mousIKB whose show we were, at this point, late for.

Who is that you ask? Well you have met her here on The Couch Sessions before. Imani K. Brown is an artist in the most simple and complex use of the word.

We were anxious to get to Fredericksburg, VA to see the solo exhibition, “The MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy”.  Up pulls a blue sedan with dark tinted windows and a driver with a ponytail who looked like Antonio Banderas (which PR rep, Jorge Lander brought to our attention later in the evening). We were on our way… well not quite we had to take a detour to Lincolnia, VA first to pick up a 15 passenger van to high tail it down the road an hour to Fredericksburg.

An hour passes…

We arrive in a quaint little city with signs pointing out the way to downtown Fredericksburg. We pass Honky Tonk Tattoos, plantation-like houses, a man in a dusty old American flag tee-shirt and a cool little vintage shop which was our signal that we were entering the funkier part of the city. We take a left on Caroline Street and roll to the end of the block to 1025. After our 2 hour mis-adventure with the charter bus we were finally there.

Enter… three brown girls.

The spot was called Spaghetti Project, a boutique for designer toys and home of the brand Chief Rocker, owned by husband and wife team Arlene and Edgar Munoz. DJ Ragz had my head nodding as soon as we walked. Mixing, scratching, cutting; creating new blends and sounds, Ragz gets two thumbs up.

The shop has exciting pockets of eye candy like KidRobot, MINDstyle, the Chief Rocker tees, custom skate decks from various artists – all HOT! I was able to pull myself away to the gallery space located in the back of the shop. What I like the most about the exhibit was the light, airiness of the art  as well as the evening itself. Not only was this the opening reception for the exhibit but it marked Imani’s 30th birthday. It was a real celebration equipped with an emcee cipher, artsy fartsy folks, b-boys, art and tasty food! I was greeted by the most familiar of Imani’s work – tats and kicks at the front of the gallery. Moving further into the exhibition I met Miss Indian Pussy herself and a whole new range of what Imani K. Brown is bringing to the table. I have seen Imani’s work on many an arm, leg and foot walking around Washington DC, the girl has got skills!  Fashion. Cartooning. Painting. Customizing. Tattooing.

You know how artists do. Paint it, deconstruct it, reconstruct it; whatever they imagine they can express. Indian Pussy is Imani’s boisterous alter-ego from Côte d’ Ivoire in the cartoon form of a pussycat. “The Miss-Adventures of Indian Pussy” is a creative look into the mishaps and lessons of life with its many cast of characters. From skateboard decks to large wooden mounts, bike bodies, de-constructed guitars, and CLOTHES with live models, Imani  is building a brand with Indian Pussy.

The exhibition gave us a taste of the cartoon which has Indian Pussy with an ice cream cone… but not for long. To see how it all plays out check out www.artisticsole.com on Wed, June 16 and Celebrate Comic Book Day with the OFFICIAL release of “The MISS-Adventures of Indian Pussy” to the public.

After checking the exhibit and coveting some tee-shirts we re-boarded the charter van to head back to DC.

An hour passed…

We arrived to find the original chartered bus with the driver STILL in the same place with the same problem. The evening ended full circle!
