On Saturday 06.12.10 graffiti artists, djs, emcees, bboys and bgirls from all over gathered on a roped off block to celebrate hip hop: exchanging ideas, listen to great music, tag the walls and dance their asses off. There were kids everywhere, people cooking out, vendor booths set up, performances, non-stop music from various djs, breakdancing battles and of course graffiti.
The BBOY BBQ is back! For the 1st time ever it was held in West Philly at The Square (48th/50th & Westminster Ave. between 48th & Lancaster Ave. & 52nd St).
The BBOY BBQ has been on hiatus since 2007. Aul Purpis (0f 84 and GARGANTUANS) approached Pose2 (one of the BBOY BBQ founders) about having it in 2010 in his neighborhood where he grew up. After planning and preparation with his crew, the BBOY BBQ came and went with much success.
I spoke with Aul Purpis a few days after the BBQ to inquire about next year’s event. Aul Purpis hopes to make this an annual get-together in Philly again and encourages artists, performers, sponsors and anyone interested to contact him for BBQ 2011.
