Chiddy Bang – All Things Go
Chiddy Bang – Decline
Band Name: Chiddy Bang
Hailing From: Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Genre blending hip-hop
Sounds Like: A less raunchy Spank Rock, combined with the “new school” tendencies of The Cool Kids or Pac Div.
Nuggets of Hotness: All Things Go, Decline
Even though Philly is sometimes looked down upon for the bright lights of New York, the city has been on a roll lately with fresh, new talent. Everybody from Beanie Segal, to Diplo, to The Roots, to Amanda Blank, Jill Scott, and others have called Illadelph home, and their burgeoning music movement should not be overlook on any trip up I-95.
Enter Chiddy Bang, the hip-hop collective from the city of Brotherly Love that,is continuing to make a name in the city. With a palate that samples such indie rock staples as MGMT and Passion Pit, the collective from is steady trying to expand the boundaries of hip-hop. The sound mixes doses of electro and club as well, yet the duo keeps the instrumentals fresh, avoiding the pitfalls of many in the new hip-hop generation. For those who don’t like a dose of Radiohead with your 16 bars, you will be disappointed. For those who realize that the changing hip-hop landscape and it’s ever constant blending of new sounds, like myself, Chiddy Bang is a good look. They just dropped their first mixtape, The Swelly Express, and my favorite song so far is the Sufjan Stevens sampling “All Things Go.” (Props to The Maroon Cafe for the find.)
