I am all about the mash-up. There is nothing doper to me than when two different genres are met head on with an explosive impact – and the late DJ AM and Travis Barker collabo, ‘Fix Your Face’ is just that. The duo took some of the best hip hop, rock and alternative bangers and put them against the ill scratches of AM and the dope drumming of Barker – and the result was a hot ass mixtape that came and went unnoticed by many but yet kind of blew up on the low.
Released in the summer of 2008 the mixtape was available as a free download and features artists such as Michael Jackson, Biggie, Daft Punk, Timbaland, NWA, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Estelle, Lil Wayne, Phil Collins, M.I.A and Damian Marley. Supported by a string of successful tours and innovative marketing, Fix Your Face also showcases the extraordinary vibe between between AM and Barker and it quickly turned me into a fan of them both – although I had never seen AM spin live nor was I ever a fan of Barker’s group Blink 182. But after listening to this I did come to realize that Barker is a beast on the drums and AM definitely deserved all the hype he had received.
They both manage to take some of my favorite songs (Juicy, Da Funk, Boyz In Da Hood, Rock With You, Lolipop, American Boy) and put their own spin to it without losing the original concept. And it really is unfortunate that two will never be able to work together again… but the music they were able to create together will always remain in rotation on my iPod and if you haven’t had the chance to hear it yet – then you should definitely peep it now.
