Recap: The Couch Sessions at the 2009 MTV Woodie Awards

Unfortunately I was not able to make it up to NYC for the 2009 MTV Woodie Awards, however, my homegirl Senari was in the building.

The Woodie Awards is the marquee event for the MTVu channel, which is syndicated to over 800 colleges and universities. Like everything that the network touches, the awards show was executed in typical MTV fashion, with tons of drunken debauchery (no underage drinking kids!) and staged shenanigans. The college era “red Solo cup” was ever in vogue that night, as well as the keg stand, which apparently has not gone out of style.

The winners list is quite surprising, as Kings of Leon beat out, Drake, Asher Roth and MGMT for Woodie of the Year, and 18 year old Never Shout Never (aka Christofer Ingle) beat out Wale, La Roux, Grizzly Bear and Passion Pit for Breaking Woodie. Even more surprising? 20 year rap veteran Tech N9ne won the “Left Field Woodie” over Janelle Monae, Amanda Blank, Jay Retard and Major Lazer. Some of these selections are still leaving me scratching my head.

Performance wise, Passion Pit got rave reviews, while the always innovative Matt and Kim’s stripping entourage will leave people talking. Indie (now major label) faves Death Cab for Cutie and Jack White’s new band Dead Weather held it down. On the hip-hop end, the ever venerable Clipse were joined by Cam’ron and Rick Ross for their performance.

From what I’ve seen and heard, I’m kicking myself for not taking that Chinatown bus up to NYC for the night. The Woodie Awards air on the MTV family of networks on Friday, December 4th.
