A lot of times when a new video comes out from an female artist I like, my first inclination is to look at her wardrobe and styling in the video. If it’s not that great, chances are I’m not going to like the video. Not so in the case of UK soulstress VV Brown’s new single “Game Over”. The clothes are what MAKE the video. The styling is all alluding to symbols of British imperialism and it’s sort of awesomely done. The track is also big. Big and brassy, with a horn section that is on point. And of course, I’m not going to leave out the fact that VV Brown has an incredible voice.

But don’t take my word for it. Just watch it.

Looks: stunning mix of Kimora Lee Simmons and Janelle Monae – check!

Style: crazy swagged out, leftfield-but-accessible – check!

Music: big, bold, and catchy sound – check!

Video: colorful, fresh (albeit slightly busy) visuals – check!

So why do I still not dig this the way I should? I think homegirl’s a star but this song is too pop or too calculated sounding or something. For whatever reason, it’s just not clicking for me the way it should. Interested to hear what else she may have up her sleeves though….
