We all know that “blue eyed soul” is suposed to die a long, painful death, but if all these artists sound like Mayer Hawthorne, I might have to give the genre a last minute pardon–at least for another few months.

The 29 year old Michigan native caught my ear with the track “Maybe So, Maybe No.” To most who are tired of the genre, it might be a rehash of the past, but Mayer’s smooth fassetto voice leads more into Smokey Robinson territory, a side of the “revivial” genre not really explored by the new movement.

The other thing that sets Mayer apart–he plays and arranges his own instruments. Not too many singers can carry that distinction.

Mayer is going on tour with Stone’s Throw this summer, and is stopping through DC’s 9:30 club on May 7th.
