UK Tings: Morgan Zarate

Morgan Zarate  feat Eska and Ghostface Killah - Sticks and Stones

Morgan Zarate feat Raphiel Saadiq - I Miss You

I stumbled upon South London producer/beatmaker Morgan Zarate on Gilles Peterson’s radio show and was immediately hooked on this dude’s music. Zarate has been in the underground scene in London on his own and as a member of Spacek with Steve Spacek in the 90s. He’s also worked with such acts as Amp Fiddler, Mos Def, Raphael Saadiq and Slum Village.

The track, “Sticks and Stones,” featuring Ghostface and UK Soul sesation Eska is, as Peterson would describe, a “classic.” It recreates everything we love about classic producers like Dilla (whom Zarate shares as inspiration), without trying too hard.  The track with Raphiel is a pretty dope futuristic soul track–but Zarate keeps it simple, and agin, dosen’t try too hard. Both songs are from Zarate’s highly anticipated LP, which unreleased, and he’s currently seeking a label distributition deal.

What do y’all think?
