Review: Santogold – Santogold
by Winston "Stone" Ford
If you don’t know, Santogold is Santi White, the singer, producer and frontwoman extrodinatre from Philly who has slowly worked her way behind the scenes to become a music sensation.
The first thing you have to get out of your mind is this: Santogold is NOT a M.I.A. clone. Although Santi and M.I.A. may be friends and touring partners and they share the same producer, Santi’s music gets much of is DNA from her time fronting the punk band Stiffed. Songs like “Lights Out,” “Say Aha,” and “You’ll Find A Way,” rock hard, and show a confident yet feminine rock frontwoman. But to say this is a rock album is an understatement, Santogold is an album that simply fails to be classified. Songs like “Creator,” and “Starstruck,” bring a completely different sound to the table, and dub styled tracks, “Shove It,” and “Unstoppable,” switches up that sound yet again.
Santogold maintains to create an edgy, left field experience without having to try too hard. With so many styles on the table, the album still sounds cohesive, which Santi’s voice being a constant instrument on every track. If you’re ready to think outside the box, then you’ve just got 24 karats of goodness..
