Detroit crooner Dwele dropped his new track, “I’m Cheatin’” on the Internets today. I’ve been a Dwele fan from day one, so I’m glad to hear new music out of him, however this track sounds so generic, especially compared to Dwele’s earlier work. Dwele was a game changer when his Rize demo dropped, but unfortunately he’s succumb to major label expectations of R&B. I don’t know if I can blame the labels or the fans, but most mainstream male R&B sounds the same, whether you’re of the Ne-yo/Chris Brown varitey, or of the Maxwell/Raheem Devaughn flavor. Hence he sounds just like every other adult contemporary R&B cat out there right now. Let’s face it, R&B is stuck in a creative rut.
However, I do dig the premise of this song, which Dwele talks about cheating on his woman not with another girl, but with her other personality. That’s deep. (from Concrete Loop)
I strongly urge you to check out the whole Dwele catalog, especially if you only know him from Common’s “The People” and Kanye’s “Flashing Lights.”

Yeah, Neo Soul is dead, but it got replaced with substandard R&B. I’ll take Neo Soul over that any day.
