Rock The Bells Tour Lineup, Controversy, Tour Dates

The lineup for the annual Rock The Bells tour was announce this week, and this year, like last year, its already generating controversy. Last year, it was the inclusion of Rage Against The Machine as a headliner (cause they ain’t hip-hop?), and now this year, it’s the inclusion of hipster-hop acts like The Cool Kids, Spank Rock, Kid Sister, Santogold and the like.

But forget the controversy….A TRIBE CALLED QUEST IS REUNITING!! Also, what’s this? The Pharcyde (who I guess have reunited, but have played some West Coast gigs last year) are also on the bill as well as Nas, Most Def and others.

And honestly, I was going to save this for another post, but what the hell is wrong with hipster-hop?? Seriously, there are people who think that The Cool Kids are the second coming of the apocalypse? Why? Cause they’re “soft?” Last time I checked, Hip-Hop had The Fat Boys, Kid N’ Play, and Arrested Development…..and somehow it survived.

Anyway, tour Dates are below…

Sat 7/19 - Chicago, IL
Sun 7/20 - Toronto, ON
Sat 7/26 - Boston, MA
Sun 7/27 - New York, NY
Sat 8/2 - Miami, FL
Sun 8/3 - Philadelphia, PA
Sat 8/9 - Los Angeles, CA
Sat 8/16 - San Francisco, CA
Sat 8/23 - Denver, CO
Sat 8/30 - Vancouver, BC

People weren’t mad at Rage (they put on a good show too). I went to Bells last year and more people were mad at those fratboys and rock heads who only came for Rage and didn’t respect the other acts.

As for “hipster-hop”, I don’t mind those artists being on the bill but does make Bells look like is pandering to whatever is new and hot right now, and I don’t know how some of them are gonna be received.

Pandering to whatever is PERCEIVED to be new and hot right now. Or at least blogged about. The reality is that all these micro genre hipster rap acts get all their love on the internets. then real amateur music journalists get all swept up in the buzz and give em some press cred. but then the truth comes out - like when they drop a wack album or fail to rock a show. “what the fuck is a jay electronica.” i lol at modern internets alt.rap.

Sigh…..people are so against “hipster-hop” because it challenges the norm of what people perceive is “black” right now. As long as you “keep it hood,” you have the respect of the hip-hop community even if you bomb. If you rap about skateboards and robots somehow you’re weak and “not black.” It’s one of the many f’ed up contradictions that Black Americans have right now.

The reason why bloggers and journalists get swept up in these acts is that they are bringing the freshest music out there right now, like it or not. Radio acts all sound the same. Little Brother puts me to sleep, and as much as I love political rap, I can’t be angry all day…

the only people complaining about hipster hop are NYC cats who are mad that their shit ain’t selling anymore and labels and media don’t give a damn about them and wannabe thugs who think lil’ wayne is the best rapper alive
