Lupe Fiasco - I Got Cha Video

ScreenShot001.jpg

Not making this Lupe Fiasco week, but Honey Soul just linked to the new video for his US single, “I Got Cha” featuring Pharrell, of course. Why does this jawn remind me so much of that Jay-Z Foxy Brown video from back in the day? Colorful can’t even really describe what’s going down here.

The YouTube version will be up very soon, unless the \clowns at Atlantic have anything to say about it. The track itself is actually getting decent radio play, and I almost lost my ish when I heard it at the club a couple weeks ago. I’m glad that the clowns at Atlantic dropped this single over Daydream, because he needed a good club hit to break in the US.

Speaking of breaking, I’m going to plead and beg will all of y’all to BUY FOOD AND LIQOUR. If you’re feelin’ Lupe and you want to help this alternative/Negrotronix/hip-hop culture to progress, then you have to send the major labels a message. All they react to is dollars and cents, and if acts like Lupe fail nationally, then it means more Laffy Taffy for you.

Does Kid Sister Got Next?

kidsister.jpg

Kid Sister - Let Me Bang

I might need a late pass on Kid Sister. Ive heard the name float around the internets, but I’m so swamped with other people’s music that I haven’t gotten around to listening to her ish.

Supposedly she’s one of the next MC’s outta Chicago. There’s a heavy influence of Twista in her flow. I don’t know if that’s just how Chicago MC’s sound, or if an intentional marketing gimmick. She’s also got some UK influence to her too. Could she be America’s response to MIA and Lady Sov?

Props to Jerome, Midwestern Goodness

Random Ish: Friday, August 18th

Sup people?

It’s 80s Baby week at XXL.com, and in keeping with the theme, they dropped the 80 most influential people born in the 80s. I hope they were joking because this list is a little suspect.

Get your misogyny on! Girls Don’t Like Boys, Girls Like Cars and Money and the latest Kreg and Dez Show Podcast.

Cassie can’t sing. Are we shocked? I figured that most people knew that their favorite pop stars couldn’t hold a note to save their lives. But if she cooks chicken like she claims she does, then its all good.

Pop music is like wrestling. You know its fake, but you watch anyway.

Speaking of wrestling, I ended up seeing Booker T (King Booker?) when he was arriving at MCI Center for Smackdown. Dude was built.

And meanwhile, some real celebrites were parting down the street. How can I get down with this??

Speaking of DC, youth crime is on the rise. If some 12 year old tries to come near my cell phone or my iPod, I will beat his a$$.

So most people don’t like the new design. I’m slowly working on a redesign. I’m also working on some other interesting next level Web 2.0 ish that I should debut pretty soon.

Anyway, I’m off to Philly. Lata people!

I got an email about this a couple days ago, and I’m only just getting around to posting it. It’s from Brooklyn MC Spec Boogie. No relation to Mick Boogie I presume. Anyway, this Mixtape is blowing up around the Internets so I’m definitely taking a look.

Update: So I listened to it and it’s okay. Not bad, but not great. But it’s free!

Speaking of mixtapes, I have an idea for one that I’ve been thinking up. All I need is the right MC (who’s not afraid to take a little risk) and the right DJ. Interetsted? Get at me.

Quick Takes: J Dilla, The Roots, El Nino, Kings of Diggin’

theshining.jpg

J Dilla - The Shining (preorder at Amazon)

With two posthumous releases already in 2006, and two more coming down the pike, you are already seeing the evolution of hip-hop greatness at a level we didn’t see when he was alive. You know where I’m going with this. If Tupac is the new Elvis, then J Dilla is the new Tupac.

But with Dilla, that’s a good thing. Although the man had a production catalog that would rival the elite in the game, the dude pretty much went unnoticed for most hip-hop heads throughout a majority of his career. His death, however, has brought us a new revelation of a master producer who deserved more respect when he was alive.

The Shining, which Dilla never completed, is a testimony to the dude’s greatness. Unlike the beats that drove the instrumental album Donuts that was released earlier this year, the instrumentals on the Shining seem warmer, and more inviting, and remind me of his production on Champion sound. Busta, Common, MED , J Rocc, and Dwele provide their vocals to the project to varying degrees, however, the Common rap on “So Far, So Good,” probably stands out as the dude’s best rap of the past 5 years.

gametheory.jpg

The Roots - Game Theory (preorder at Amazon)

When The Roots moved to Def Jam, many fans predicted the group’s eminent demise. And honestly, when they released “Don’t Feel Right” as the first single I was singing the tune of doom and gloom myself. However, once you get past that track and dismiss it as a business move to entice the Hot 97 crowd, you get to see that the Philly based group has put together probably one of the best albums of their career. The only problem with Game Theory is that it is heavily crafted around samples. In the end makes it better, but of course it defeats the purpose of having a band, doesn’t it?

elnino.jpg

Ocote Soul Soundz & Adrian Quesada - El Nino Y El Sol (buy at Amazon)

El Nino y El Soul, the new collabo from Ocote Soul Soundd and Adrian Quesada landed in my mailbox at a time when I was getting ambushed with non-stop hip-hop and pop ish. El Nino y El Sol goes in the other direction. The disc starts off a little rough, but makes up for it towards the middle and the end and is definitely more on the afrobeat/latin jazz tip with some hip-hop elements on the side.

Funny thing is, the thing started because Martin Perna’s car broke down in the neighborhood of Adrian Quesada’s hometown of Austin during a road trip. The result was the experimental collaboration of El Nino y El Sol, which is fictitious movie about a boy trying to journey to the sun, recorded in Quesada’s home studio during those two weeks. The foundations for songs like La Lucha Sigue and Divinorum draw heavily on instrumental hip-hop, with Divinorum getting the nod from DJs such as Bobbito Garcia.

El Nino Y El Sol drops on August 8th from ESL Music.

diggin.jpg

DJ Muro/Kon and Amir - The Kings of Diggin (buy from Amazon)

Kings of Diggin is not really meant to be understood by the general public. The creators of the compillatioon know this. America just dosne’t want to listen to rare and random songs from old school artists that they’ve probably never heard of. That’s not a sexy marketing theme.

However, this compilation appeals to the crate diggers out there. The 1% of us who crawl basements, old music stores, and back alleys for an obscure drum break here or a R&B hook there. These DJ’s crawled out of the way places from all over the world to come up with the songs from this compliation, and the result is an interesting, albeit random collection of 60s and 70s soul. There’s some tunes that you’ll probably recognize, but many of these songs weren’t even popular in the decade they were produced, so your parent’s may not even know about them.
It’s a good look.

Sleepy Brown - One of Dem Nights

Sleepy Brown - One of Dem Nights

I thought Margarita was OK. A good opening single but lackluster nonetheless. One of Dem Nights is the complete opposite. This song is classic Sleepy’s Theme-era Sleepy Brown. His new album, Mr. Brown drops in September.
