: The Couch Sessions Podcast - Sharon Jones

We've been sweatin' Sharon Jones for a while now. And go figure, the lady seems to be one of the hardest working women in showbiz these days.

Respect where respect is due. Jones and her band was even sampled by Kanye West for the Rhymefest track, “Brand New.” But unfortunately, you can’thear a Daptone’s track on commercial radio, nor will you see Ms. Jones on MTV. Even so, the band has amassed a large following based on word of mouth and their energetic live shows.

We caught up with Ms. Jones in DC, a day after she brought down the house at the Black Cat. Peep the interview.

Regular Guy Misogyny?

I don’tmean to do another post about Murs, but I came across this post on OKP that I just had to talk about.

Apparently, some chick is saying that Murs views on women are just as bad (or worse) than a video on BET Uncut. Her quote: “this ‘women didn’tlike me in high school cuz I was too smart and different for them’ thing might be more insidious than Jay Zs “Big Pimpin” because of how ordinary it’s making these opinions sound.”

I’ve heard this argument before, and I’m not surprised. The chicks who say this bull usually are the ones who wouldn’tget Murs the time of day at a club anyway. The fact that she thinks that a dude like Murs is more damaging than a dude like….lets say, Luke, says something about her personality and maybe even her self esteem. I’m sure she would be the first one on the dance floor if they played “Bitches ain’ t Shit!”

Now if ya don’tknow about Murs, peep his lyrics. He says that something to the effect that the only woman he loves is his mother, that women break is heart, give him no play, and that women don’tdate him because he’s “more Coldplay,” than most other street dudes out there. The dude could rap about skanks and hos, but nah…he keeps it real. I think a song like “Bitches ain’tShit,” is more should be damaging than anything that Murs (or Slug) says.

Women rant and rave all all the time about how they are disgusted at how they are treated in the music industry, but Murs wants to treat women like they want to be respected and he gets shafted for it. In the end, that’s not his problem. That’s society’s. What do y’all think?

Gnarls Barkley makes moves in UK

gnarlscrazy.jpg

So if you haven’theard already, Gnarls Barkley (the dynamic duo of Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo) have made a splash across the pond with their hit single “Crazy”:

US hip-hop duo Gnarls Barkley have become the first act to score a UK number one single on the strength of digital sales alone.

Gnarls Barkley went to number one with 31,000 download sales
The chart landmark comes less than a year after download sales were first counted towards the top 40.

Not bad…in other Gnarls Barkley news, the duo has joined the Coachella lineup and apparently Danger Mouse is trying really hard to keep the album under wraps…i.e. no illegal downloading. Funny coming from a guy whose career started when with illegal downloading. I can’tfind the link where I read this…so if anyone else knows it, please post it in the comments.

Sy Smith Back Home in Body Language

bodylanguage.jpg

Chanteuse Sy Smith is back in her native DC this weekend to perform in the musical Body Language. Here’s the play’s description:

Set in 1983 when Jehri curls were still in and cut off sweatshirts and leg warmers were just coming in, BODY LANGUAGE is about an aerobics instructor and her wanna-be actor boyfriend determined to stay together despite the odds. When Chuck has big news for Tina, she’s hoping he’s going to pop the question. Instead, his good tidings are bitter sweet. While Chuck has gotten his big break as a regular on a tv show, at the advice of those representing his “best interest”, he decides to leave Tina behind. Heartbroken, she must try to pick up and move on while he must try to forget and move on. The theme of the play is a line straight from Billy Dee Williams character Brian in “Mahagony”: “success is nothing without someone you love to share it with.” (All of the music in the story are the songs of Ms. Patti Labelle).

For a preview of the show, go to BlackPlays.com. You can also get more info at the Warner Theatre.
