YouTube of the Day: Friday 80’s Dance Party!

Where would you see a saxophone playing duck and a fish with lips so big, it would make Angelina Jolie’s look like two popsicle sticks?

In Billy Ocean’s video for “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” that’s where.

First the Fat Boys Break Up….

10.jpg

Damn, it’s gettin' bleaker and bleaker for DC nightlife man.

Miss Hipstah reported to ya'll that Blue Room is shutting its doors. Now, Metroblogging DC is reporting that Nation is closing.

I never been to Nation, but it’s most likely the only Techno/Punk venue in the DC/Baltimore area. From what I hear, the place was supposed to be no holds barred and unpretentious. Their Buzzlife events got major international press (before and after the Federal gov'ment true to shut it down).

According to Buzzlife, the concert venue is being closed to make way for that damn baseball stadium. What a shame.

No word on if Buzz will continue in DC or move back to Baltimore.

Mind Control in Miami

mindcontrol.jpg

I'm not gonna front. I was supposed to be in Miami this week for the Winter Music Conference. I was supposed to sippin' mimosas with some fine Latina women on South Beach, and pimpin' my Infiniti rental car. But thanks to some run ins with the DC DMV my dream hasn’thappened, in I'm stuck here in DC. Damn, and since I'm sort of a part of this “music industry,” everybody I know is livin' it up in either Austin or Miami. What gives?

Anyway, DC/Baltimore’s Mind Control Crew will be holdin' it down from Saturday through Tuesday at Hotel Shelly in Miami Beach. We hung out with Godfather Sage last summer (dude, I'm gonna get that Podcast out real soon, promise!), and he'll be spinning all four nights. The best part is that its FREE and there is a “reasonable” cash bar. Miami heads, check this out for us.

Oh, and rest assured, TCS will be holdin' it down in Miami NEXT YEAR!

New Music: Dave Ghetto

daveghetto.jpg

Dave Ghetto - “Coming Up” Feat. Erik Rico /
“Hey Young World Pt.2″ Feat. Phonte & Mystic”
from Lovelife? Counterflow (2005)

Of all of the so-called underground rappers gettin’ heat these days, Dave Ghetto seems to be overlooked. The Camden, New Jersey based rapper has connects with everyone from Bobbito Garcia to Phonte of 9th Wonder, however his album, LoveLife? dropped back in November with little or no fanfare. What gives?

File him under “another 9th Wonder, Phonte approved rapper,” tag all you want, but Ghetto has some spit to him. Ghetto has managed to combine the backpackerish aspects of the rap game while keeping it gritty and street at the same time. The dude has been on the grind for a while now, and LoveLife? has been said to be one of last year’s hottest underground releases.

Peep these tracks and let me know what you think.

(Props to BeatLife)

YouTube of the Day: The Streets “When You Wasn’tFamous”

I really like this song AND this video. The whole point of the song is that in a drug induced binge, Mike Skinner (aka The Streets) had some kind of tryst with well known pop star. Who it is however is a mystery. If you go over to Imageyenation, the guys are having the “When You Wasn’tFamous Photoshop Challange” Check it out.

CD Review: Ursula 1000 Here Comes Tomorrow

URSULA1000 - Here Comes Tomorrow COVER (600x600).jpg

If you were to combine pop, hip hop and rock with a dash of reggae and a pinch of salsa and mix it all together in a disco blender, the resulting sound might sound a lot like Ursula 1000.

Alex Gimeno aka DJ/Producer Ursula 1000 can play anything”and I mean ANYTHING”and you will dance to it. In his newly released album Here Comes Tomorrow, there is a continuous mix of the classically clean sound we have come to know and love in lounge music, but there is also something dirty, even raunchy that hides underneath the beats, making you want to do more than just dance.

Coming from DC’s very own Eighteenth Street Lounge label, the Miami-born Gimeno started out as just a kid with a dream and a seriously large record collection. Now, he DJs everywhere from some of New York”s finest night clubs, the Euro nightlife in Germany and the UK, and now at ESL”s SXSW and Miami Winter Music Conference parties. He”s done remixes for artists like SI*SE, Felix da Housecat, The Faint and my personal favorite, The Powerpuff Girls. His track “Kinda Kinky” was featured on the Fighting Temptations Soundtrack. The man has even said “NO” to a supermodel”s song request.

Here Comes Tomorrow will be his fifth release on ESL. As I”ve already said, his tracks are fun and uplifting, but at times, will make you want to get down and dirty. And you can hear every kind of music in his tracks. The track “Hello! Let”s Go To A Disco” is reminiscent of a 1980″s club hit or possibly a Queen-anthem like song. The song “Elecktric Boogie” conjures up images of fashionable b-boys doing the robot at the Roxy. “Two Tone Rocka” is kind of a tribute to the classic roots reggae from whcih much of today’s pop music get its inspiration. “Descarga en la Discoteca” (the translation of which I am not going to say”it”s inappropriate) is a tongue-in-cheek look at that old skool mariachi/salsa music your grandmother might have listened to”crossed with the funky bass lines of a porn score. There”s the single “Boop” which is just a fun track that will definitely make you think of Betty Boop.

There are so many fun things about this album that it’s hard to say who will like it and who won”t. It is such a musical combination that there is something I”m sure everyone can enjoy about Here Comes Tomorrow.

AbsolutKravitz or Miss Hipstah’s Teeny-Bopper Moment of Zen

absolutkravitz_070306.jpg

So I love Lenny Kravitz. Always have, since I was about 13 and my mom bought me his music because she thought he was a nice Jewish singer. Which is still up for debate.

At any rate, Lenny got together with Absolut Vodka to create an ad campaign called…AbsolutKravitz. For the campaign, he wrote a song entitled “Breathe” which was later remixed by the likes of Chromeo, Eric Roberson, and Jazzanova. All in all there are 12 tracks (the original and 11 remixes). If you go to the website, you can download them all…FOR FREE!

Negroclash!

Yeah, we totally sweat them.

Probably because they were so nice to use when they were here.

New Music, Pop, UK Sounds

New Music: “Hoodie” Addias Remix

sov.jpg

Lady Sov - “Adidas Hoodie Remix” (feat. Mizz Beats, Skepta, JME, Ears, Jammer and )Baby Blue

Yes, I think that my jury is still out on Lady Sov, but I just got this remix in my inbox and my ass is just blown away. I don’tcare about what any of y’all say, the UK is still the most innovative country when it comes to music. Peep this UK grime remix and TELL me that you don’tagree.

As much as we want to hate on UK artists like Lady Sov, MIA, and even Dizzie, they’re at least bringing something new and innovative to the table. They’re taking the US hip-hop formula, flippin’ it, and making it something their own. Unfortunately, I think that the US hip-hop public will not embrace our UK brethren like rock circles have been doing.

So what do ya’ll think about the track?
