Blogging While Black?

More Convo: Bol, Jason

I don’teven want to get into the controversy about the “Blogging While Black” panel at SXSW this year. And y'all know how I feel about panel discussions anyway.

If you want to sit through the video of the panel, peep it here.

Still, what disappointed me more about that panel was not the ish that went down, but the lack of diversity that was on stage. Now, some people (okay, white people), might be like…”Diversity…wha?” But when you look at who’s on the panel, they all seem like uppity academic types who all hang out “Friends” style at the same coffeeshop.

I'm not tryin' to hate (cause I frequent coffeeshops, but only when Miss Hipstah drags me to 'em), but if you really want to do something about Black bloggers, then you should have hip-hop, Afropunk, and controversy all equally represented. I don’tknow who picked the panel, but I can safely say that they F'ed up in their selection process.

Jimi lists his “dream” panel for BWB 2007 at the end of his blog post. I figured that I should add my two cents as well.

List after the jump.

Security gets ready for ATL’s Opening Weekend

atl.jpg

In various malls in Atlanta, security guards are being told to prepare for potential mayhem.

A memo obtained by the city???s Channel 2 Action News reveals the company General Growth, which owns local malls Cumberland and Perimeter, sent a memo warning staff at its properties showing the film to ???prepare??? for its release on Friday, stating: “The movie could cause behavior problems among customers.???

Greg Alexander, owner of Cascade Skating Rink where parts of the ???ATL??? were filmed, was shown the memo by Action News. He said in response: “I think it has a possibility that it could be discriminatory.”

Alexander says he has written proof from the filmmakers that the movie, starring rappers T.I., Big Boi and actor Evan Ross, would not contain gratuitous sex and violence.

This movie does not look like a movie most should be worried about. It’s rated PG-13, so you know it can’tbe THAT BAD. Unless people in Atlanta are going to riot because they see the rollerskating rink they always go to, I think this pre-emptive security preperation is a little over the top.

ATL opens on Friday, March 31st.

Thanks to Crunk & Disorderly for the info.

What I'm Listening To

What I’m Listening To…

Van Hunt - On the Jungle Floor - When I first got this CD, I hated it, but over the course of about 5 or 6 listens, I gots to say that this disc is gonna be hot when it drops next month. It’s not the “chill with your girl CD,” that his first CD was, but it’s more on the “lets funk out and party type vibe.” Full review expected soon.

boondock.jpg

Better Than Yours presents The Boondocks - Yes, I’m gonna put out a disclaimer that I know this cat personally, but still I’m still going to give the man props. The mixtape is proper. Peep it here.

Mark Ronson - Here Comes the Fuzz - I got this CD for 99 cents, and it’s one of the hottest CD’s I own. If ya’ll don’tknow who Mark Ronson is, you gotta read up. Most recently, he scored a deal with Rhymefest, but before that, the dude has produced for everyone from Nappy Roots to Sean Paul to Weezer. If you find this CD on the 99 cent rack, buy one for you and for your friend.

Wale Oyejide - One Day…Everything Changed - There are some CD’s that make you thank Al Gore for inventing the Internets. This is one of them. I wouldn’thave heard about this disc until I stumbled on a writeup on Wale Oyejide on some random J Dilla tribute post. I don’tknow too much about Wale, but apparently the dude has enough clout to recruit Dilla and MF Doom for his disc, which dropped in 2004. It’s a fabulous combination of hip-hop, jazz, and afro beat and it is a must buy. Cop this. Seriously.

We Love You, Ghostface

doll_front.jpg

As we all know, Ghostface Killah has a new album coming out on March 28th.

But more recently, the Ghostface Doll. Now I know that there have been a lot of people waiting and waiting and waiting for this doll to come out. And, as you see above, it’s a pretty amazing doll, though I wouldn’twant to pay $500 for it.

Thanks to Different Kitchen for the heads up.
