New Music: Corinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae - “Like A Star”
from Untitled Album

Although the UK has been slipping in the music department lately (Lady Sov, anyone?), my second favorite favourite country continues to produce stellar artists, producers, and MC's.

I was supposed to write about Ms. Corinne Bailey Rae a few weeks ago, after the BBC picked her as being an “Artist to Watch” for 2006. However, since I've been working crazy hours, I haven't had the time and a couple other blogs beat me to it. I have had the time to play Ms. Bailey Rae's MP3s on repeat for the past couple of days.

Obviously, the UK singer will draw the obvious comparisons to India Arie, Billie Holliday, Lauren Hill, etc. Also, she's got the whole “grew up singing in a baptist church” background that the music mags seem to like. However, she also draws from UK influences like Morcheeba and Sade.

Corinne Bailey Rae is touring the UK right now, but you know there's gonna be are US tour plans in the future.
