Miss Hipstah's Playlist for Keeping Sane

bride_gun_head.jpg

I'm slacking. I know. I haven't posted in FOREVER. But I have a good reason. I'm graduating in December and I'm working on a heavy thesis. I mean really. This thing is taking years off my life. The picture should give you an impression of how I've been feeling lately. (That or just give you a laugh…marriage really is like having a gun pointed at your head, huh?)

At any rate, I have been listening to some good music. It's really the only thing that keeps me going at the moment. So I thought I'd compile a play list of songs that I'm listening to right now and tell you a little about some of them. Some are old. Some are new. Some are downright outdated. But regardless, this is the music that makes my life bearable at the moment.

“Technologic” Daft Punk: Ok, I love this song. It has yet to get old for me. Maybe because I hear something new in it every time I listen to it. That's like every Daft Punk song. They break down everything before they build the track so you can hear every chord, snap, bass, and word.

“Rage!” Chromeo: This basically described every emotion I had when I was going through a break up. And made it fun!

“Somersault (Danger Mouse Remix)” Zero 7 with Danger Mouse and Doom: A beautiful track. Danger Mouse does such good work, it's not even funny.

“A.T.H.F. (Aqua Teen Hunger Force)” DangerDoom: Off the new acclaimed DangerDoom album The Mouse and the Mask. HILARIOUS! Hearing Carl say “You know, I mean the stuff that White people like…something BADASS…like R.E.O Speedwagon.” and Meatwad rapping about getting steady bitches and hoes and candy for his nose, makes my life every time the track comes on.

“Nextel Chirp” Maceo: SHUT UP! ALL OF YOU!

“Jus A Breath Away” Life Samadhi: This track is one of the most interesting tracks I've heard in a while. Life samples Ani DiFranco, who for those of you who don't know, is a feminist/activist folk singer who has been wowing college lesbians for the past ten or so years. On this track, Life uses a part from one of my favorite Ani songs (I'm not gonna say which one. If you like her, figure it out.) And for me right now, having a song in which someone says “What are you gonna do after graduation? Whatever you gonna choose, I know you'll be the greatest” is just so necessary.

“Iko Iko” The Dixie Cups: I'm not sure when this jam came out, but I think it was in the 60's (correct me if I'm wrong). And it was the Dixie Cups fuckin around in the studio. Their instruments are drumsticks and coke bottles. It's a great track.

“Stay With Me” Platinum Pied Pipers feat. Tiombe Lockhart: Go get their album. I mean it. Do it. Right now.

“Bona Fide (Remix)” Slick & Rose: The lovely ladies of Slick & Rose get remixed. It's funky. It's bumpable. And best part is they have it for free. Check it out.

“Fire” Lethal Bizzle: Lethal Bizzle is an MC from across the pond. Up beat even when some of his music sounds like someone's getting murdered.

“Black Barbie (Modeselector Remix)” Jahcoozi: I found this track on an MP3 site. And for the life of me I can't remember which one. But it's off the HOOK. Based out of Berlin, this trio is made up of “Anglo-Singhalese MC Sasha Perera, German producer Robot Koch and Israeli bassist Oren Gerlitz”. Their sound is pretty hot. Their new album will be released in November.

“Dust” Van Hunt: It's good cause it's Van Hunt. There's not a whole lot else to say.

“Overcompensated” The Slack Republic: Another band I found on MySpace. These guys are fun, punky and love Golden Girls. How can they not be cool?

“Monday Morning” El Pus: “She came into the bar respectable and left a whore.” Nuff said.

And that's it. I need to get back to my work. I’ll see you all in a while. Who knows when I’ll be resurfacing next. Send me love!
